General

Top1. What is Purerave?

Purerave is a social networking site for rave and party-goers. You can use it to keep track of your own private daily activities or you can use it to keep track of your friends or even find some new ones. It's a safe, friendly, and efficient way of staying in the know with your friends. It facilitates new interactions in a natural and unintrusive way.

Top2. Do you have a real job?

Yes I do. Though, I probably spend more time working on Purerave than I do on my full-type paying job.

Top3. Do you make any money from this site?

No. The exact opposite, actually.

Top4. How do you spell Purerave?

Purerave should never be spelled with a capital "R" for "rave". Either all uppercase, lowercase, or capitalized "P" are acceptable. Thanks.

Top5. I don't like someone, can I have their account deleted?

Nope, sorry. If that were the case I would have deleted many accounts of members that I personally do not like!

Top6. I love you, can I have your babies?

Contact me in person.

Top7. Is there an option to have my banner on Purerave?

Yes there is! Please see the Advertising on Purerave page.

Top8. Is there any way that I could help the site?

Become a Community Supporter, or just being a good community member. See "How can I become a community supporter?".

Top9. What accesskeys does this site have?

Accesskeys are great, allowing you to jump to links or buttons without using the mouse, which is faster if you're about to type something anyway! To use an accesskey press ALT and the required key at the same time. On Mac use the CTRL key instead. Internet Explorer will simply highlight the link or button, you'll then have to press the Enter key to activate it. Firefox (and other Gecko based browsers) will activate the link without having to press Enter after (it's a configuration option and can be disabled).

The top links (ie. Home, Get-Togethers, etc..) have sequential accesskeys starting from 1 to 9:

ALT+1 for Home
ALT+2 for Get-Togethers
ALT+3 for Buddies
ALT+4 for Gallery
ALT+5 for Journal
ALT+6 for Calendar
ALT+7 for Inbox
ALT+8 for Poetry
ALT+9 for Reviews

In the inbox:

ALT+q to quick reply
ALT+s to send
ALT+n to send & delete
ALT+r for a full reply window
ALT+. (. maps to > on most keyboards) to read the next new message

While composing a message:

ALT+r select recepient
ALT+c compose
ALT+p preview
ALT+s send
ALT+n send & delete

While composing a journal entry:

ALT+c compose
ALT+p preview

In the gallery:

ALT+, (, maps to < on most keyboards) to view the previous image
ALT+. (. maps to > on most keyboards) to view the next image

A good cycle to remember could be:

ALT+7 (go to Inbox)
ALT+. (view new message)
ALT+q (quick reply)
ALT+n (send and delete)
repeat..

Top10. What decides Purerave's mood?

This feature was first unveiled in the Change Log. Purerave's mood is the most used mood of the members who are online at that moment.

Top11. What is a rave?

A rave is usually an all night dance party with DJs who play some kind of electronic dance music.

See Wikipedia entry on raves for more information.

Top12. What is the ::ghost:: thing all about?

The ghost was introduced as Purerave's mood for the 2005 Halloween season. It was then made into a limited time emoticon with the code ::ghost::, which resulted in . The popularity of the ghost, also known as ghostie, and the request to keep it for good resulted in the limited run I heart ghost buttons (see the journal entry).

Althought the ::ghost:: code no longer works, journal entries using that code will still show the image provided no comments are posted and the entry is not edited. Once the entry is edited or comments are posted then the image will revert back to the code form.

Ghostie can still be used with the regular [image] code by linking directly to http://www.purerave.com/images/ghost.gif.

Ghostie will be appearing every Halloween.

Top13. What kind of cross-promotion options does Purerave have?

We have a logo which can be placed on flyers or other print material in exchange for banner space and/or custom contests.

Top14. What methods of payment do you accept?

We accept payment through PayPal which handles all major credit cards even without a PayPal account. We also accept personal cheques, cash, or money orders sent via snail mail and Canadian web banking Interac Email Money Transfers for Canadians who have a web banking account.

Top15. What's the most ever online at one time?

The most members online at the same time occurred on November 13, 2006 at 22:22 when the maximum online reached 600!

Top16. Where can I send my feature suggestions and comments?

Contact me in person.

Top17. Where do the horoscopes come from?

The horoscopes are syndicated from here.

Top18. Why do the polls suck?

Because it's hard coming up with interesting poll ideas. If you can come up with anything better please let us know!

Profile & Accounts

Top19. Can I have more than one account?

No. It doesn't seem fair that some people have more than one account and is against the EUSA.

Top20. How can I add/change my profile image?

Go to Gallery then view the album containing the image you want to use. Click on the thumbnail of the image so that you view the full size version.

At the top of the full sized image there will be an "Add to Profile" link. Use that link to add that image to your profile.

Top21. How can I become a community supporter?

By upgrading and sending money to help us pay for some of the costs of maintaining the site.

Top22. How can I become a moderator?

I, Joel, am the only one who can choose and assign moderators. It usually has to be someone I have at least some contact with so that we can keep in touch on issues.

Top23. How can I block someone?

Find the member you want to block and use the Block link on the person's profile page or in a message you received from them.

Top24. How can I change my login name?

Only Community Supporters can change their login name. Use the Profile page.

Top25. How can I delete my account?

The account deletion form is found under the Profile tab of your My Account section, or use this direct link.

Top26. How can I get events listed in my profile?

Go to Community then Events, find an event you want to attend (or have attended) and click on the "Mark My Attendance" link.

Top27. How do I change my password?

Use the Password section. All personal details are managed in the My Account section.

Top28. How do I disable auto-login?

You can enable or disable the auto-login on the customize page. Simply click on "Disable auto-login". That page is linked from the Home page and from Profile page. If for some reason that does not work, you can try searching for the purerave cookie on your machine and deleting it (or simply deleting all your cookies).

Top29. I had Auto-login enabled, but now it won't log me in. Why?

For a bit of added security, the auto-login feature is only valid for two days after you last logged in using it. That is, if you have auto-login enabled and login, then do not login for more than two days then auto-login will have to be re-activated.

You might also try deleting your temporary internet files and deleting all your Purerave cookies.

Top30. I paid to have my account upgraded, how long does it take?

If paying via PayPal with an "eCheck" then the account will be upgraded only after the eCheck clears, which can take up to a week. An eCheck payment is drawn directly from your chequing account rather than a credit card.

If paying via PayPal without an eCheck (ie. with a credit card) then the account will be upgraded within a few hours. Actual time depends on how busy PayPal servers are, network issues, etc.

If paying via a Canadian Bank with an Interac eCheque then the account will be upgraded within an hour.

If paying via a mailed cheque or cash then the account will be upgraded within two days of receiving the envelope, which itself could take up to two weeks.

Top31. I think someone got into my account, what do I do?

Let me know as soon as possible, and I will try and see if I can track anything down. However, I probably will not reveal any IPs to you.

Top32. What happens when my CS account expires?

Expiring CS accounts will be downgraded Regular.

The Buddies limit will not be enforced when downgrading. That limit will still be in place, but your account will simply be over the limit until you decide to make changes. When you do decide to make changes to your buddies, it is then that the limit will be enforced.

The inbox limit will also be enforced as soon as you view your inbox.

If you do plan on renewing your CS account it is best not to wait till the last minute, or until after your account has expired to upgrade again.

All expiring accounts are sent a 30 day reminder message. If CS accounts are not renewed within 30 days after their expiry date then they will be downgraded.

Top33. Why are some names orange?

Orange names are moderators who are available to address some of your concerns about the site.

Top34. Why are some names red?

Red names are Community Supporters.

Top35. Why did my account get deleted?

Either it was inactive for a very long time and just got deleted, or you violated the EULA. We never promised to warn someone before deleting their account.

Top36. Why do some bios have a scroll bar?

If you're using a browser other than Internet Explorer then a scroll bar will appear if the bio text is very long. Any browser that supports most of CSS 2 will show the scroll bar.

If you're using Firefox or another browser that uses the Gecko rendering engine (such as Netscape or Mozilla) then you will not be able to use your mouse's wheel to scroll the area. That is a bug in the Gecko code, which has been fixed but will not be made available until Mozilla 1.8 and Firefox 1.1 are released. Firefox 1.1 is scheduled to be released in June. Until then you can try a nightly build, which has the bug fix if you really need that feature.

Abuse

Top37. Do CS accounts get deleted for violations?

Yes! Community Supporters have to abide to the same End User Agreement as everyone else. They are not above the rules. We have deleted CS accounts before for violating the End User Agreement. They will get one warning just like everyone else, before their account is deleted.

We make no guarantees in supplying refunds to ex-CS account holders.

Top38. How do I know who reported me?

Abuse Reports are always anonymous. We do not reveal who made the report. It is the abuser's actions that speak for themselves, and that is what we use to judge what action should be taken.

We don't care who made the report or why. All we care about is reading and seeing what the abuser has done and taking appropriate action based on that.

Top39. How do I report abuse?

There are Report Abuse links on inbox messages, journal comments, gallery comments, and poetry comments. Following the Report Abuse link will present you with a form to fill out to report the abuse. There are specific instructions on the Report Abuse page explaining the process and what has to be done.

After you report the abuse you will receive an automated message once your case has been addressed and acknowledged.

Top40. How serious are you about harrassment?

Very!

Top41. I think someone is a "faker", can I report them?

Yes. They will be told to remove their images or their account will be deleted.

Top42. I'm being harrassed, what do I do?

Keep all the messages or comments you get, and let us know as soon as possible. If the comments/messages are abusive then the person will be warned and/or deleted immediately. If the comments/messages aren't themselves abusive, but the person will not stop commenting/messaging you after you've already asked them to stop, then we will warn them and/or delete. You must tell someone to stop without getting involved in any of the name calling or abuse. If you get caught up in any argument or "fight" with someone then you are just as guilty as they are in violating the EUSA; in some cases we have deleted both parties involved.

Top43. What are the different Abuse Report Actions?

The acknowledgement from an Abuse Report will note one of the following actions:

Not Specified (very rarely used)
An unspecified action was taken.
No Action taken/Needed
For some reason or another we decided that the abuse claim did not require any additional action against the abuser. It may also mean that a warning was already sent to that member during the same session and no further warnings are needed at that given time.
Warned
The abuser was warned about violating the End User Agreement.
Account Termninated
The abuser account has been terminated.

Top44. What is that "Abuse Report" message?

An abuse report is generated and sent out automatically to the person who made the initial Abuse Report (ie. the person being harrassed). The abuse report is used to let the person know that their report has been acknowledged and notes which subsequent action was then taken.

Top45. What is that "Abuse Warning" message?

Abuse warning messages are sent to members who have violated the End User Agreement.

Buddies

Top46. I received a +Buddy notification request, but no one to approve, why?

That happens when the request has been removed before you get a chance to view it. Notifications are sent when a new +Buddy request is made. Notifications are not removed if the request is cancelled.

Top47. What is the point of +Buddies?

Your +Buddies are displayed on your public profile page so they show others who your friends are. Since being someone's +Buddy gives them the ability to closely track your logins, you have to approve their request.

Having someone as your +Buddy lets you see the last time they logged in as well as how many unread messages they have from you. It also lets you edit or delete any unread messages you sent them.

Top48. Why can we only have a limited number of +Buddies?

Maintaining +Buddies on the server side requires a bit more resources than regular buddies, and to save the server from blowing up we had to put this limit. Also, we wanted to make it so that you have to choose carefully who your +Buddies are, otherwise members would just make every one of their buddies a +Buddy.

The Account Types page lists the number of +Buddies you can have depends on your account type. CS get 20 and Regular get 10.

Gallery

Top49. How to best take a screen shot of Purerave?

To take a screen shot of Purerave, or any site, use the Print Screen button usually located at the top right of the keyboard. To capture only the browser window use ALT+Print Screen.

Screen shots look best if saved as a GIF rather than a JPG.

Top50. Why do animated GIFs only animate on the full size view?

When animated GIFs larger than 100x100 pixels are resized all the animated frame information is lost and only the first frame is shown. That is why thumbnail versions of the GIF images are not animated.

If you want your GIF thumbnail to be animated then make sure the image is not greater than 100x100 pixels. Images smaller than 100x100 pixels do not get resized, and the thumbnail image is the same as the "full size" image, and they'll be animated.

Top51. Why do some images not load when viewed/linked from other sites?

We no longer allow external linking to images hosted on our servers. Sending the URL of the image to someone will still work if they click on the link, but linking to the image so that it gets displayed within the page using an HTML image tag will not work.

The only time the image will load is if the person viewing the image logged into Purerave earlier using the same browser.

Top52. Why doesn't the upload image preview work in Firefox/Mozilla?

By default, the new Netscape versions (7.x), Mozilla, and Firefox (1.0) do not allow links with the "file://" protocol. That change was made as a security feature, but you may disable. Firefox prior to 1.5 requires you to disabled it for all sites, while 1.5+ allows you to disable it on a site by site basis (in our case, just for Purerave).

In Firefox 1.0-1.4:

  1. In your browser's address field, type about:config and list of options appears.
  2. Find the security.checkloaduri entry, and double-click it to change its value from true to false.
  3. You may need to restart your browser for the change to take affect.

In Firefox 1.5+:

  1. Start -> Run -> %APPDATA% to open the application data folder.
  2. Mozilla -> Firefox -> Profiles folder.
  3. Create a file named user.js and paste the following into it:

    user_pref("capability.policy.policynames", "localfilelinks");
    user_pref("capability.policy.localfilelinks.sites", "http://www.purerave.com");
    user_pref("capability.policy.localfilelinks.checkloaduri.enabled", "allAccess");

  4. Restart Firefox.

Top53. Why was my image deleted?

They probably violated the EULA and were considered to be inappropriate. We do agree that there are grey areas to what is "appropriate", especially from person to person, so contact us if you think you have a case. Private images usually fall under the same rules, unless we feel they are "okay", but can see how other members would find them inappropriate.

Top54. Why will images linked from outside of Purerave only load when I'm logged in?

This question is related to "Why do some images not load when viewed/linked from other sites?". This is actually a result of a different feature and not really what was meant to happen. When the server load gets too high (due to too many users on the site, or other reasons), priority is given to image requests coming from users who are logged in. That seems only fair, but also results in the false assumption that you must be logged into mypurerave all the time to view images. That is not the case; as I stated, it is only the case when the server load gets too high.

Top55. Why won't my image upload?

They may be larger in KB than the allowed amount of 200 KB for Regular and 2 MB for CS accounts. Or they may not be a JPEG or GIF file format. Just because it has a .JPG (.JPEG) extenstion does not mean it is a real JPEG file. There are variations of JPEGs which do not get uploaded correctly. Try making the file size smaller or saving it as a different JPEG and try uploading again. Some work places' firewalls may not allow file uploads.

Journals

Top56. How can I delete my journal?

Use the Journal Attributes page found under My Account.

Inbox

Top57. How does the @my.purerave.com email work?

All @my.purerave.com email is handled by Everyone.net which is an external.

Top58. What are saved messages for?

Old messages are automatically deleted when your inbox passes its allowed quota. Marking a message for saving will safe guard it against being deleted when your quota is passed. New and saved messages are not automatically deleted as part of the quota enforcement.

Top59. Why were some of my inbox messages just deleted?

Inbox messages are deleted periodically as they pass the limit for that account type. The number of messages you can store in your Inbox will depend on the type of account you have.

Technical

Top60. Did you make this entire site yourself?

Yes I did! It is not a prefabricated application!

Top61. I think I found a bug, how/where can I report it?

Contact me with as much detail as possible so that I can reproduce it.

Top62. What details is publicly searchable via Google or other search engines?

Any information that can be accessed as a guest (ie. non-logged-in member) could appear as search results, but only the page's title and address will be displayed. To get an idea of what a search engine sees you should (disable auto-login) log-out and browse the site as a guest, any page asking you to log-in is not accessible by the search engine either.

Top63. What did you use to make this site?

The site is written in PHP and uses a MySQL database.

Top64. What happened to all the DJ mixes that used to be online?

They were taken down with the old Purerave.com site to save bandwidth.

Top65. What server software does the site run on?

This answer is classified, but all we can tell you is that it's *nix based.

Top66. Where did you get those cute icons from?

The icons are made available from famfamfam.com under the Creative Commons Attribution 2.5 License. They were converted from PNG to GIF to be more IE friendly.

Top67. Where is the site/server physically located?

The server is physically located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. (Hence the time zone is EST).

Top68. Why don't you delete inactive accounts to save space?

The fact is that inactive accounts take up very little space. The total space they take up is less than 1% of the entire database. And finding and deleting only accounts which are certain to be inactive takes time (which we have little of).
