It's been established by a friend of mine, but is run by the Ugandan women themselves.
I've been involved in certain volunteer experiences in Africa, and I've unfortunately had
to bear witness to the corruption of different charities and NGO's. This is the 'real
deal' (pardon the cliche). Malcolm spent $500 US to create this NGO, and to promote the
women to take responsibility of them themselves, the money has been a loan. I think 10 or
50 cents from every purchase will go back to Malcolm until the loan is repaid. After that
100% of the money goes to the women. Indeed, Malcolm makes no net profit from the
grassrootsuganda. The necklaces cost $10-15... Please check out the site, even without
intentions to buy--there are profiles of the necklaces makers which swell my eyes with
tears...i find just reading their stories is a very effective and quick way for me to
reconnect with my compassion for others... maybe it'll do the same for you.
