a brief history of my addiction to beatz

Adam's quite the character, you ask him for some minor details, and he says that
there's no way that he could say anything more then "uh.. i like stuff"... and
then, 3 days later, out of the blue, you find yourself in posession of a small novel. so,
from the horses mouth, here's the entire story from adams point of view. well, with a few
minor edits.. wink..

Where did it all begin. Well, I've been into music my whole life. My parents brought me up
in an environment that was never without music. My first memory of becoming addicted to
music was when my sister gave me a mix tape in grade 3. that was somewhere around 1987,
and it had run dmc, Art of Noise, and BDP (boogie down productions) on it. I listened to
that tape until it broke, and thinking back, that was probably when my music addiction
began. Jumping ahead a few years, in grade 7, my sister introduced me to Ice T, Public
Enemy and other similar artists. Then it was alternative in junior high, coupled with Pink
Floyd, The Beatles, Violent Femmes, The Doors.. all consistent visitors to my record
player, tape deck, and my first cd player. I moved back to Edmonton in grade ten, and I
knew nobody, so I had 1 friend. Music.

That’s when I first started listening to Nine Inch Nails, Rage Against the Machine, Front
242, Coal Chamber, Pantera, Sepultura, and KMFDM(to name a few). I was intrigued by
Industrial music, and also by the Tribal rhythm of Sepultura's Roots album. Throughout
highschool, industrial and metal were my main influences, which is probably why I took
such an interest in Drum & Bass when I was first exposed to it. I was @ HMV one day & was
looking through the "ELECTRONICA" section, and came across a Metalheadz 3 disc
set. I didn’t even listen to it, I just bought it. I didn’t even know what d&b was at the
time.. it was just.. "Wow. this is some great music!".

Dillinja's early release, Warrior Jazz, was instantly a favorite of mine, and I was
suddenly on a quest for more music with the same subsonic basslines and mesmerizing beats.
I discovered Tuesday Nights @ Rebar on Whyte ave with celcius, MC Deadly & gundam, which
was like the most amazing night I’ve been to.

Soon added was The Chemical Brothers, Prodigy, Daft Punk, The Orb, etc... which was good
to hold me over, but still didn’t compare to what that metalheadz compilation made me
feel.

A few more years passed, and I had moved back to Ontario only 18 months after I started
partying. I went to the World Electronic Music Festival and that was when I decided I
wanted to spin.

Usually at parties, I would dance for hours like everyone else, half the time not
knowing/caring who was on the decks, but at wemf, I was up-front staring at the dj's
movements, trying to decipher what was going on, constantly trying to pick apart the
subsonic equation that drum & bass is compiled of.

Back to Edmonton for Feb. 2003, an old party going friend(Vix) and I started going out in
search of d&b/jungle nights. after like 3 weeks of searching, we discovered Thursday
nights @ Donna @ the citadel. That’s when me n Vix decided I was gonna start spinning.

I met Critical Condition, and he was selling his decks & some vinyl. I Jumped on this. AL,
if it means anything, Your one of the leading causes to me sticking with it. I met My MC,
Jimi James not long after, and he introduced me to a group of people I’ll never forget.
The 106 cru. This is where I spent countless days/weeks/months at the decks, trial and
error. Finally picking up beatmatching that July, just as I was feeling hopeless, that was
a turning point. I was kind of stuck for 6 months when DJ LP, said female, and I had a
massive mixing session. I learned more that day than I can account for, I just watched,
observed, and absorbed. This is also when I got addicted to scratching.

On April 8th, at Stars Nightclub, We threw a breaks party called "Slam On The
Breaks". I prepped for this night for 6 weeks, I was so nervous(obviously), and the
night was a total success. I played my first set with Mista Hellfiya, A breaks master, and
we tore the roof off.

A Bit of a break came through a Friend of the trueinfinite crew. DJ XU (houseunderground
88.5 cjsr) when he had to do a cover show for someone on a Sunday @ midnight. His
Girlfriend who I’ve known for years, Amanda, took a listen my first breaks mix. And I
eventually played 6 more times On CJSR, killing the fear of playing for people I don’t
know.

Lately, I’ve been just working on my technical skills, and trying to take mixing a little
more seriously, while also focusing on scratching. If people ask me what I mix, my
response is usually "what do you wanna hear?", although d&b/jungle will always
own my heart.
