Laura Dern shows some great range. Great tone and visuals make up for the lack of cohesive narrative. I lost my grip on the story about halfway through, and once I gave up on trying to decode the film, I started enjoying it more.

Personally i think sense isn't so relevant. what's relevant is the picture he's painted and the pallete he's used. The film is a perfectly filmed nightmare, every shot carrying with it a bizarre sense of terror and uncertainty. The plot, the story, what it's "about" wasn't so important to me. By the middle of the film i decided that i clearly wasn't going to understand it in the sense of a traditional narrative, and i granted myself the freedom to enjoy it for what it was. I feel that this produced an infinitely more rewarding effect than had i concerned myself with the narrative. It's certainly not for all, and probably most tastes, but if you can give yourself to it you will be amazed.
