This movie has been the best one I have seen in almost forever, sick & twisted, I love this new genre of adult fairy tale's.

Some people have to remember this is a free fucking country, free expression, if you don't have anything nice to say, keep your comments to yourself and don't read any reviews but your own. My GOD are we going to start fucking world war III just because people have their own opinions that are different or can't read subtitles?

okay tards... those of you who expected more of the "labyrinth" OBVIOUSLY have no zero ability to read a title figuratively. could it possibly have occurred to you that the labyrinth were the twisting and turning missions that she had to go on. sometimes movies are figurative... besides, basing your expectation of the movie solely on the title is a immensely stupid way to go about seeing movies. it's almost as stupid as going just to see a singer/actress you like. for example, my friend went to see dreamgirls in a ghetto area and all the people there went to see their beloved beyonce. they, however, had no idea the movie was going to be a FUCKING musical and would boo everytime anyone besides beyonce was singing. now judging a movie by its cover isn't as stupid, but it's on a similar level.

that said, the movie was NOT slow and was NOT boring unless you are an ADD idiot who needs blood, gore, sex, romance, or some other trite plot device to get through a movie. i think the point was not to have too much fantasy, it was the contrast between the girl's dreamworld and the adult's harsh realities that really defined the film. Awesome movie.

I couldn't have asked them to make a better movie.
"Very realistic".Makes you belive in magic again.
I loved how the concept was so dark and mystical,im sure parents whom took their children to this movie, were a little shocked at the graphic content.

The ending in the labrynith is my favourite scene.*

"Nature's Puzzle" or Pangaia's labyrinth.......
No bullshit, straight up cinematic brilliance.....
If only all motion pictures had this much sustainance.
A wicked ass mature fairy tale about life's risks, sacrifices and ineveitabilities.

The whole having to read subscripts is a pain in the ass but well worth it. This movie is quite the head trip.

i dont think this movie was very good at all it was really point less

guillermo del toro disappointed me in this one, hate to say it since it;s nice to see someone out of my favourite town in the movie business. the story kinda used the whole fantasy thing to sugar coat the child's reality which in any case, children do, when i thought the story would be more based on that labyrinth aspect.
still, amazing character build and drama.

Saturday July 14, 2007 - 3:20 AM

Haunting_You

reading the reviews on this piss me off.

if you dont like to read subtitles, youre an idiot. its that simple. i used to watch a lot of subtitled anime where the subtitles flash, literally, for less than a second. now *thats* hard to enjoy. this whole movie had *very* good subtitling (im semi-fluent in spanish, yet watched it the first time by only reading the subtitles and not translating), and they dont flash too quickly to read and enjoy. its a very easy read; its to the point where you can read the subtitles and still watch the movie, which is very important in my opinion. if you dont like it solely for the subtitles, youre just an illiterate fuck that cant read fast enough and should probably pick up a fucking book once in a while.

"its boring" some people say. yes, sometimes plot and character development takes a little time. sorry its not a mindless every-character-is-the-same action film.

its a shame too many people hate this movie, because they cant grasp the concept of slower story-telling for effect, because this is a fantastic movie. i mean, its one of the best movies ive ever seen. my ONLY qualm with the movie is that, like many others, i wish it had more fantasy in it. its hard to put two storylines into 2 hours, but i think Del Toro did a really, really, really good job with it.

conclusion: if youre a retard that cant read, or if youre a retard that cant appreciate great story-telling over senseless action, youll hate this movie. if youre someone who loves a good plot (or two), youll absolutely adore this movie. anyone who is a genuine fan of movies (like myself) will truly love this movie. and im a really hard critic to please.

ehhh, 50/50, take it or leave it. Had a few good things but the previews lead me to believe it would be better.

One of my new favorite movies. Would have liked there to be more time of the movie spent in a crazy fantasy world. Loved the tasks she had to complete and the crazy baby eating monster lol

I fucking loved that movie. First, I didn't realize the movie wasn't in english... to my surprise, Spanish with english subtitles. Anyways... I thought, well...i'll give this a try and stop it when it gets monotonous...and boom ABSORPTION! I loved it. If you have yet to catch it... try it out. It's unique...

One of the worst I've seen, such a boring movie.

Thursday July 05, 2007 - 3:20 PM

~Glitter-Stick~

it sucked. leave it at that. i mean, they made the movie out to be some fantasticly whimsical story, but it wasn't. it's a war movie, and don't get me wrong, love my war flicks, but not when i'm expecting for crazy out of this world of imagination shit. it's like the village, which also sucked advertised as a horror flick. a complete and total lie. this movie was boring, and nothing that i was expecting. all i can say is i'm glad i didn't waste money on it in theaters.

fucking movie was bunk as hell. the story was garbage!
i enjoied the fawn and the subtitles, and the shock value but the stroy was so shit. when was the kid actually suposed to spend Time in the labryinth??? like fuck, u see 7 minutes of the thing. i was pumped for a tripped out film that woulda kept me interested not confused and anxious for a what never happend

I have to agree here. Although throughout the movie at various points, it was visually pleasing- I was bored. I wasn't even able to make it through the entire movie. Not because I couldn't follow the plot or some bullshit like that...but because I was genuinely unimpressed.

some people may not be interested in the allegorical/quasireligious undertones of the plot but the action might diminish any indignations such viewers may suffer. the characters are well portrayed and believable. well, most of them. the cinematography and special fx are good. small children may be frightened when the capitan uses the business end of a wine bottle to...well... destroy an unfortunate peasant's nose. there isnt a LOT of violence in this movie, but it portrays violence realistically, for time period and feel of the storyline. i really liked this.

Wednesday June 06, 2007 - 7:05 AM

this movie is just sooo beautiful and magical, the set and the costume design is outstanding. not to mention the plot is so suspensful, my heart was beating so fast at some parts, and my eyes were watering at others. AMAZING.

If anyone out there gives this less than five stars, they clearly have no sense of good-storytelling. Del Toro has been an incredible director of many movies with exception to Blade 2. If you liked this, try one of his earlier works called "The Devil's Backbone". All the old fairy tales from Europe have been Americanized (or Christianized however you wanna look at it) and softened to a popular culture puff, so appreciate the raw-ness to it and the true lesson learned.

Mr.Fahrenheit

I've seen this movie so many times it's not funny, not really because it's just that amazing of a movie... but because I had it on my computer long before the DVD came out, and everyone at my school wanted to watch it.

I'm don't really care about the subtitles, and after seeing it so many times well... I have to say that I don't really need to read them anymore.

I'm really amazed how dark this movie was, and I loved every second of it.

The best thing about this movie is that since it came out, people who rent it from my blockbuster call in and say "Hey wait... this movie is in Spanish!" Fucking Sheep....

Tuesday June 05, 2007 - 11:04 AM

otl_hardcore

I was a little irritated that I had to watch with subtitles because I don't like them. I don't watch movies to read them ya know.

But this movie was completely worth it. I didn't even realize I was reading them by the end because I was so into it.

I want to give it 5 stars so bad but I can't bring myself too. The name of the movie is extremely misleading. I think it should be called "The Spanish Civil War Through Little Girls Eye While Slightly Enjoying A Labyrinth." To be honest, the fantasy portion is one of the best I have ever. I loved it. The faun was absolutely stunning. I thought he was an incredible character and he looked great. The way the movie was filmed and everything was great. The plot seems confused a bit. Originally, it seems like the girl is a princess which then turns into some massive plot change to the Spanish civil war. The labyrinth and the fantasy portion was scarce which displeases me. If the movie was titled something else and didn't seem so fantasyish, I would have given it 5 stars.

The movie was 75% war 25% Labyrinth. It was an incredible movie regardless. Just disappointed in the lack of fantasy. Boo.

This movie is INCREDIBLE. I hate hate HATE fantasy movies, but this blew me away.

I agree with some of these reviews, it is NOTHING like I thought it would be, based on the previews.

It was SO MUCH BETTER!!!

best movie i've seen this year. amazing cinematography and direction with outstanding effects from a distinctive artist. beautiful.

if you can't keep up with subtitles, i recommend that you either wait for a dubbed version. honestly they are slow and easy to read and the translation is perfect. you almost don't need to know what they are saying to follow the story.

intertwining the girl's imagination with the war story is perfect. if you don't like gory and realistic violence, this isn't for you.

otherwise i highly recommend that everyone see this and learn from it.

The musical scores, the acting, the cinematography, the story-- All well-thought out and presented beautifullly. Even though it is dark and depressing, I, for one, thinks it was a hopeful ending too, to look past our physical bodies.

I loved the twist, I definitely feel that it was worth the price of the movie ticket.

Thursday February 22, 2007 - 12:01 AM

samsara

if i went to the movies to see good acting, cinematography, fairies, and overall high rate production, this would have been quite the film. on the otherhand, i found it to be a loose infusion of two epic plots, where the more prominent one seemed to be the weaker of the two. when you make a fantasy movie, you also have to make sense

i guess some guy who realllllly liked saving private ryan, saw fight club and wanted to bridge the gap. it didnt work, you mother fucker

Wednesday February 21, 2007 - 4:56 AM

ijumpfromcars

It was an interesting juxtaposition of the innocence of a fantasy world of pixies and fairies with that of the harsh reality of war and fascism. The monsters were also skawey. I would recommend seeing this film 60% blazed, enough to be blown away but sober enough to read subtitles / interpret Spanish.
cheers

this movie is incredibly beautiful. i highly recommend it.

Probably the best movie I've seen all year. I don't mind subtitles...
I'm a fast reader, and about 2 minutes into the movie, I don't even really realize that I"m reading them.

I think this is the only movie that has made me laugh, cry
be creeped out, be scared, hide in my hands, and feel depressed
all within the span of two hours.

Original, imaginative storyline. I can't get over how amazing
this movie is. Go and see it!

this movie was amazing.
i was expecting it to be more fantasyish...but regardless, AMAZING!!!

glad u liked it i hated it sooo much cuz it was all in spanish and english subtitles and yes the previews where missleading

Tuesday February 20, 2007 - 4:18 PM

ravendancer

it was a good movie, but the previews for it were completly misleading, which pissed me off, because i wanted to see a fantasy movie not a movie of the spanish war, and a little girl going to the fantasy world in her mind to escape from the world's harsh cruelties.

the entire movie was subtitled, nothing wrong with that, i actually prefer foreign films, and anyone cant keep up w/ subtitles need to brush up on their reading skills.

best movie I've seen in awhile

hmm well, a lot of amazing facets to this movie, but in the end it is a bit convoluted.
the fact that there are 2 plots packed into each other makes it extremely interesting and ateention-grabbing, however on some level it feels like the stories don't sum up at all. The revolt of a people and the fairytale journey of a girl seems to be a very disproportionate combination.
The effects, shots and general technical aspect is mindblowing though o.0 props to that.

Monday February 19, 2007 - 5:23 PM

Creative, dark with a dreary overcasting on the whole film.

Enjoyed both stories and how they played on one another.

It was the perfect film. In every way it was perfect.
I don't think i have seen a film that has come close to being this good in a long time. Well not one made in north america.
Thank god the rest of the world is getting some cred for bringing out fantastic films!

There are less and less Alice in Wonderland-ish influenced tales out there. This movie had so much emotion that an audience member can truely relate to-really sets it apart. I was very emotionally involved in the movie. I could relate to Ofelia...everyone uses their imagination to escape turmoil in reality.

I loved the idea of life after death...in her death, she joined her family high on a throne as a princess.

That relates back to the religion I was raised with (kinda).

The film left me questioning whether this really happened to her or if she thought it all up.
I looove open-ended film.

Kudos to del Toro.
