Being a closet fanatic (or not so closeted anymore?) for Jane Austen adaptations, I am always taken away by the story presented on screen, whether the other aspects of the film are that good or not. I did make the observation that in this film the cinematography was rather uninspiring save for one extended dolly shot at the ball. For its length, difficulty, and the ability to effectively evoke the passage of time, I admired this technique.

In terms of how the story was presented, I found the love story between Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth to be more heartfelt and touching. It might have something to do with the period setting and all that Jane Austen’s name evokes. However in the same spirit, events arose more abruptly in writing of that time, and thus I found Lidia’s running away to be very sudden. I’m not saying it’s unrealistic – even by today’s standards, just unexpected (even though I knew the story).

This film is of decent quality and is highly watchable, but I thought it lacked its own personal stamp. It’s a straightforward adaptation with nothing to calls its own. Perhaps it’s just got big shoes to fill what with past Austen adaptations garnering Oscar nominations, having beautiful scores, bright wit and charm, etc. Or maybe it’s simply not the best one of the Jane Austen books? (I've never read it)
