Johnny Depp is just amazing, I would definiately see every movie with him in it.
Enjoyed the whole creation and candy in this movie, plus setting except some the the characters were really annoying like that girl who popped bubbles.
Sunday February 10, 2008 - 7:19 AM
Johnny Depp MADE this movie..
Wasn't as good as the classic though...
Saturday July 21, 2007 - 11:36 AM
the original was MUCH better .. but i relaly enjoyed how there were a few adult jokes added to it
Friday July 20, 2007 - 12:29 AM
I did not like it as much as the original, but it was still entertaining to watch.
Wednesday June 27, 2007 - 5:45 PM
it was better then the original
Monday May 28, 2007 - 11:27 PM
not as good as the original and Johnny Depp was a little scary, but still a great re-make. Plus Burton kept it truer to the book
Monday May 14, 2007 - 11:24 PM
Some movies should just NOT be re-maid.
and this is one if them.
this is not a great johnny depp role,
id say it kinna stooped him down..
The original, obviously was WAY better.
Thursday April 05, 2007 - 1:08 AM
two words....mush rooms...hmm, well it was a crazy trip but i can see it sucking ass without 'assistance'
Monday March 26, 2007 - 12:04 PM
Tuesday March 20, 2007 - 7:08 PM
i LOVE the original..the new one was like....creepy, i only watched it when i was babysitting some kidlets....haha but nahhh...not worth it
Tuesday March 20, 2007 - 4:49 PM
I like the original. I wasn't to impressed with the newer version
Monday March 19, 2007 - 1:30 PM
I can almost say that I hated this movie. The original one was much, much better.
P.S. Easy on the airbrushing!
Monday March 19, 2007 - 12:07 PM
It was well done but I liked the original better. A big wrong they did was no ompa loompa song. The 2nd one was more true to the book though. I also thought they did charlie better in the 2nd one although I liked the other children more in the original.
Monday March 19, 2007 - 9:47 AM
Definately one of the best movies ever! Tim Burton is a awesome!
Monday March 19, 2007 - 8:24 AM
Love Depp, Love Burton, But the original was better.
Monday March 19, 2007 - 12:28 AM
Johnny Depp rules, but this was garbage.
I think Im the only person in the world who hates Tim Burton.
Also, the only person who hated the original movie?
Sunday March 18, 2007 - 1:54 PM
This movie is f**King gold and deserves five stars. It's funny as hell and the visuals are amazing.
Johhny Depp is effing wonderful, no one could play a better Willy Wonka except maybe Marilyn Manson. Tim Burton just rocks my nuts. I love how dark and twisted this version is, like it's supposed to be. I suppose the original is probably great in its own right, but if want to go watch the original then go watch the original and stop fucking whinning that the Tim Burton's version is different. Tim Burton is just a GOD so you just have to respect that.
Oh and the Ompa Loompas and Deep Roy fucking rocks. The songs are great the way they are performed, the first and last are the best of all. I love how Tim Burton cared enough to be annal about the choreography.
Saturday March 17, 2007 - 2:04 PM
I liked it a lot better than the original, although its tough to compare the two movies. The original was a walk in creative script writing, being as it is extremely untrue to the book. While this happens with almost every movie adaptation of a book, the original was almost perverse in its interpritation of the symbolism.
Tim Burton is a fantastic director, and his movies are visually stimulating and beautiful. My only complaint would be that sometimes he tries to go way over the top in ways that borderline the pretentious. The Oompa Loompa scenes, while amusing, and technically astounding, were very dry. I think too much effort was put into such a small part of the movie, and as I said before, it strongly borders the pretentious.
Overall, it is a fantastic film!
Saturday March 17, 2007 - 11:24 AM
It was wonderful! You can't compair this one to the first one though, they were never meant to be anything alike.
it was alright... but i liked the original wayy better... it had more moral to it rather then just comedy relief for the kids...
still johnny depp is a good actor.. and love his performance in edward scissor hands
Friday March 16, 2007 - 7:39 PM
Friday March 16, 2007 - 7:25 PM
I loved tim burtons vision and johnny depps acting. They did very well with this movie. However, they used the same little person for all of the oompa loompas and I feel as though it made it lack personality. They should have used the original idea for that concept.
Friday March 16, 2007 - 3:10 PM
too dark, if you've ever read the was never meant to be like the the first one was almost just like the book though and though
Friday March 16, 2007 - 3:06 PM
No where as good as the original
Friday March 16, 2007 - 1:21 PM
WAAAAYYYY better than original!!!
Friday February 16, 2007 - 2:23 PM
It was pretty good, but i still prefer the original version
Tuesday January 30, 2007 - 11:43 AM
Who could have asked for more!?!?!
Tim Burton was the perfect man to take the story and twist it to utterly insane and then bring it back just a bit.
Johnny Deppy as Willie Wonka...he is the master of characters who aren't quite right mentally. I thought he did an awsome job!
The imagery was breath-taking. The factory was incredible. The sets was amazing! And the story filled in more of the story and answered things left untouched by the first movie.
In short everything i wanted it to be and then some!
Tuesday January 30, 2007 - 11:36 AM
i love this movie johnny depp is so cute
Tuesday January 30, 2007 - 10:49 AM
Despite people's nostalgia for the old version, I enjoyed the contemporary version since the social commentary is more applicable to our time.
I think Johnny Depp did an amazing job as Willie Wonka. I liked how he made him out to be a little insane and very off the wall-more so than the original version.
Tuesday January 30, 2007 - 9:22 AM
i love that damn movie. best one to actually trip off of. seems as if the creator of it was on acid. which i heard he was. so i love it
Tuesday January 30, 2007 - 6:33 AM
what Cindy21 said...
i hate the 2005 version..
Thursday January 18, 2007 - 11:58 PM
They actually make the walls melt for you!!
Tuesday January 16, 2007 - 12:57 AM
I wish there was such a place like this..well at least there's a movie for imagination
Friday January 05, 2007 - 10:14 PM
AWSOME MOVIE lmao
"everything in this room is eatable...even me...but that my children is cannibalism" LMAO
Friday January 05, 2007 - 9:03 PM
Nothing beats the orginal it was the best
Friday January 05, 2007 - 8:59 PM
Friday January 05, 2007 - 7:46 PM
I give it 5 stars because I saw this movie in the theatres on ACID...... but if there was no acid I'd give it two and a half!?! I was expecting the theme song fo sho... and the Umpa Lumpas were EXTREMLY creepy..... yea.. cant beat the original....
Wednesday December 27, 2006 - 5:48 PM
way worse than it should've been...
Depp was terrible.
Wednesday December 27, 2006 - 4:10 PM
TIM BURTON.... <3
but i like the original better...
Monday December 25, 2006 - 2:19 PM
Johnny Depp + creepy children's movies= whole new dimension.
Monday December 25, 2006 - 5:58 AM
agree with most everyone else oringinal so much better......the ompa loompa songs weren't up to Par adn Johnny Depp had sone crazy come here little kid to him....over all not bad though
Wednesday December 20, 2006 - 11:12 PM
Good. But not as a comparison to the original. Nope, it just doesn't quite get it. Johnny Depp made this version wonderful though. I think that's him at his creepiest yet.
Thursday December 14, 2006 - 2:06 AM
not going to read everyone's review, but the one i read about old movies are just sooo boring was.. excuse me if I'm just being an asshole "childish"! just because a movie doesn't have bright, fancy, and flashy colors it's boring now. you have to think about when movies are made, give them some credit for what they had when they made them, it doesn't take away from a movie when the effects or filming are shitty, but that's just my opinion..
i liked the original a lot more too, you could understand what the hell the oompa's were saying.. which i think was kind of important for lessons, seemed like that's why i liked it..
anyways, this one was alright.
Thursday December 14, 2006 - 12:36 AM
I thought Johnny Depp looked freaky!
Wednesday December 13, 2006 - 9:39 PM
Good movie, But agree with everyone else, old one was better.
Tuesday December 12, 2006 - 4:03 PM
aaaaaaaaaahahahaha you kids must be on crackity whack if you think Johnny Depp's career is going downhill.
This movie was fantastic! If you can't see the creative integrity behind it, and can do nothing but trash it for not being identical the original, then this movie was not meant for you. Tim Burton takes his movies to awhole new level of creative genius and in my opinion, this was one of his best creations.
Tuesday December 12, 2006 - 2:17 PM
Johnny Depp is a brilliant actor. But Ill always be partial to Gene Wilder. Also, the new one gave me the creeps more than anything.
Tuesday December 12, 2006 - 10:33 AM
Wasn't at all what i thought it would be. Johnny Depp was wonderful as always, but overal the movie was kind of ridiculous. Even if the new one is closer to the book, i still say the old one is better
Tuesday December 05, 2006 - 10:17 PM
Not sure if ur talkign bout the new one or the old..but the original is wayyyy better than the new one...I mean don't get me wrong i love johhny depp...but no one can replace the orginal..
Not to mention the umpa lumpa's sucksed ass in the new version..booerns....liek fer reel the re-make almost ruined it.
i think everyone should be able to have a chocolate factory with umpa lumaps..and a chocolate river
so just to clear it up 3 stars go to the new one.
5 stars go to the old one!!!!!
Tuesday December 05, 2006 - 9:32 PM
i honestly think this is a good. movie it wasn't a remake of willy wanka and the chocolate factory. for starters they have different names. so they have to be different and 2 the plots different. lil creepy how johnny depp plays his caracter but its a over all good movie
Tuesday December 05, 2006 - 8:56 PM
the original was better, hands down.
depp seemed like he was "trying" too hard to be creepy.
and instead it came off with a weird "vibe"...
hard to explain, but i didn't like it...
didn't even come to close to my expectations.
Sunday December 03, 2006 - 3:00 PM
wasnt as great as i thought it would be...however, johnny played an awsome role.
Sunday December 03, 2006 - 1:32 PM
's it.
Sunday December 03, 2006 - 12:20 PM
It was alright. Nothing will ever be better then the first one though!
Monday November 13, 2006 - 9:11 AM
this movie sucks hairy rat balls....seriously!
Monday November 13, 2006 - 1:57 AM
Fuck this movie. It totally sucked.
The original is classic and nothing can beat it. I thought that maybe Tim Burton would have at least done a halfway decent job on the film, but no. It totally blew. It should have never been made.
Monday November 13, 2006 - 12:26 AM
Tim Burton has a great head on his shoulders but could have done it a lot better. It was based more on the book but I was hoping for some gore or something really medded up to happen to the "bad" children", but NO, they all fucking lived! (or they could have shown a few Umpa Lumpas getting eatin alive by the creatures that are talked about eating them. It had a lot of cool colors in it but that is it.
Sunday November 12, 2006 - 3:04 PM
i liked it.. i LOVE the flavour Tim Burton puts in all his movies... that sorta macabre/child-fantasy-land with lots of bright colours idea. the bright colours pretty much did it for me actually. and Johnny Depp. I just find older movies kinda boring... so Burton and Depp fixed that.
Sunday November 12, 2006 - 2:39 AM
I agree with engel, johny reminded me of M.J in this movie. "Come with me little boy to my magical castle where you'll never see your parents again!"
Saturday November 11, 2006 - 10:28 PM
Johnny Depp is creepy in this movie... but very funny
Saturday November 11, 2006 - 5:06 AM
I loved this movie. It was the first movie I saw in the theatre in over a year. I loved it so much i bought it the day it came out. The thing that made this movie even better was I was doing bumps of K the whole time.
Saturday November 11, 2006 - 2:23 AM
I thoroughly enjoyed this version, personally the first one creeped me out alittle. It wasn't dark enough, didn't ring true to what it should have been. This version offers a different twist, I like both but this one is deffinetly my favorite. Loved the costume design's and the way Depp pulled the role off.
Thursday November 09, 2006 - 5:55 PM
more true to the movie, but not even close to as good as the original. i found it kinda creepy actually, and thus it get's 3 stars.
Monday November 06, 2006 - 7:11 PM
I friggen love this movie!!!!!! (not enough to give it 5 stars.....but u get the picture...lol).
I thought Johnny Depp was AWESOME!!!! He pulled that role off really well. Now, i personally think that the origional Willy Wonka and the Choclate Factory with Gene Wilder is the best one!!!!
*one last comment* i LOVE those huge white glasses.....
Monday November 06, 2006 - 6:21 PM
I'll stick with the original.
Friday November 03, 2006 - 6:18 PM
I really did not like this version of the movie at all... personally I think it sucked ass
Friday November 03, 2006 - 6:01 PM
Amazing remake. Ofcourse the original might be considered by MANY of its fans. But what I don't understand is why the fans are disapointed that the remake was DIFFERENT than the original. I think Tim Burton did the best thing possible by making it VERY different than the original. That way, we now have TWO amazing version of Charlie and The Chocolate Factory.
Friday November 03, 2006 - 3:10 PM
the oompa's in this movie ruined it for me. still, i enjoyed it.
Thursday November 02, 2006 - 7:09 PM
"Johnny Depp's Wonka was terrible, it was a little too twisted for my liking."
This is why Roald Dahl hated the first version, Wonka wasn't creepy enough.
If you've ever read the book you'd realize that Johnny Depp played Wonka exactly how he was meant to be played.
I thought they did an incredible job with this movie. I'm really hoping that Mr.Dahl's daughter will give the okay for Burton to do The Great Glass Elevator. That would be spectacular!
Thursday November 02, 2006 - 6:32 PM
if you give this movie a bad rating, you must be seriously fucked up (drugged or just mentally fucked). wonka was so creepy, but in a funny, good way. would it be nearly as good with a plain, stoic wonka? i think not. his wierdness is what makes it so damn funny. way better than the first, and i'd still give the first one 5 stars, too.
Thursday November 02, 2006 - 4:54 PM
i am in love with the ompa lompa's even though they were kinda creepy in the movie and so was johnny depp but o well he is hot anyways.
Thursday November 02, 2006 - 3:48 PM
Loved it!! I love all Tim Burton movies. And any movie with Johnny Depp.
Thursday November 02, 2006 - 3:05 PM
Better than the original. Except I can't help but miss the older oompa loompa songs..... This one was beautiful, Tim Burton is good like that. Johnny Depp played a much better Willy Wonka too. He was supposed to be distant and creepy.
Grateful Dead lingo - "Keep on Truckin" and other phrases = Love
READ THE BOOK
Thursday November 02, 2006 - 2:40 PM
Wasn't as good as the original. (OF COURSE) But still good enough to watch.
Thursday November 02, 2006 - 12:56 PM
Wednesday November 01, 2006 - 10:22 PM
I was disappointed by this movie, I expected alot more from Tim Burton.
One guy for every Oompa Loompa?? Not right!!!
Johnny Depp's Wonka was terrible, it was a little too twisted for my liking.
Sunday October 29, 2006 - 6:18 PM
Sunday October 29, 2006 - 5:41 PM
Loved The First
Hated The Remake
So I’ll Give It Half
Sunday October 29, 2006 - 3:57 PM
This movie rocks! It's such a trip. I would deffinately advise watching it when ur not sober.
Sunday October 29, 2006 - 3:20 PM
the original was awesome. so many great lines from willy wonka in that movie.
the second movie made willy look like a douchbag
and nobody could ever EVER EVER replace Gene Wilder as willy wonka.
tim burton took a character who was suppose to be of utter genius and made him into a whiny sissy little brat.
the replicas of the oompa loompas were a joke, where is the realism in all the oompas exactly the same.
tim burton had no clue as to the original wittyness of wonka,. and in the book.
grrrr, shakes my fist at this terrible awful movie.
ahh-hem, now willy wonka and the chocolate factory is my favorite movie of all time.
the song pure imagination was genius, wonka knew exactly how his factory was set up with not a single mistake (such as the fireworks of the second one)
Sunday October 29, 2006 - 2:15 PM
this was a movie for kids???? willy wonka character made him seem like a serial killer..... still a great movie
Sunday October 29, 2006 - 12:33 PM
never saw the original. so seeing johnny depp in this movie while super fried was an enjoyable experience for me.. def love it.
Friday October 27, 2006 - 10:18 AM
My original review ~~
It's not the best movie in the world, but it isn't the worst either.
And now I say~~
And I'm not trying to start a fight or anything, but Intanjible, what about Pirates of the Caribbean, Ed Wood, Secret Window, Finding Neverland, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, From Hell, Blow, What's Eating Gilbert Grape, Nightmare on Elm Street, or Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas?
Granted, he played an emotional sort of sissy-like or "pouting paleface" character in Edward Scissor Hands, The Corpse Bride, and even Sleepy Hollow, but his characters do differ. For instance; the character of Captain Jack Sparrow is far from that of Edward Scissor Hands. In Ed Wood he's a cross-dressing director which is completely different than the character of Once Upon a Time in Mexico.
I was dissapointed by a few things in Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, but that is no reason to critique Johnny Depp's acting skills. Keep in mind, that it is Tim Burton who has the overall say-so on how the character acts, talks, and dresses.
Every actor sticks to a basic character. If they change it usually flops or fans became outraged by the sudden change. Robin Williams is always a funny man who constantly changes his voices except when he played in One Hour Photo and that wasn't exactly a box office smash. Will Farrel is always a loud comic-type of character. Al Pacino is a hard-ass. Jim Carry is a funny-man. Whoopi is a loud, baggy clothes wearing, comic character. Angelina Jolie lives for action.
They all stick to one character type with a few changes every now and then. That's Hollywood I suppose.
Hope I didn't step on too many toes, but I just wanted to point that out.
Thursday October 26, 2006 - 6:37 PM
the original was WAAAAAAAAAAAAAY better
Thursday October 26, 2006 - 12:24 PM
Depp looked like a queer in this movie. He had a better part in *Blow*
Thursday October 26, 2006 - 8:40 AM
I enjoyed it. People don't seem to realize these two things: One, it's a fucking Tim Burton flick. Of course it's gonna be weird. And two, it's a hell of a lot more like the book was than the original movie.
Thursday October 26, 2006 - 7:57 AM
I love it just as much as the original... however not really loving the oompa loompa guy they should have used more than one person. mmmm Depp
Thursday October 26, 2006 - 5:28 AM
loved the original and the book... love tim burton and depp... but they should've left this one alone.... remake a shitty movie not a fucking classic... oh yeah.. nobody can beat gene wilder as wonka so nobody should try
Thursday October 26, 2006 - 4:42 AM
wkd love every min of it johnny you rock my sox
Wednesday October 25, 2006 - 4:03 PM
def. disgraced the wonderfully made original.... i enjoyed the insight into willy's life.... but seriously wtf. oompa loompas were a let down. the ideas were good... the exacution left a lot to be desired.
Wednesday October 25, 2006 - 3:55 PM
Thank you for preserving my review, cap_n_obvious, although I think at this point your name should be cap_n_oblivious. I had to delete my previous post in order to log this new one just to let you know that you're a fucking idiot who has the reading comprehension of a retarded tapir. I get extremely livid when anyone tells me I'm wrong without being able to prove it.
There is no "right or wrong" when it comes to matters of opinion, but then again I could never expect any Johnny Depp fan to be able to find the glaringly obvious similarities that nearly every one of Depp's roles possesses. He's always playing some sort of sketchy, pouting paleface, more often than not ambling shiftlessly throughout the motion picture under the grip of one or more drugs. Sure, you could regard him as a "good actor", but he plays the same fucking role in every movie he's in, the only aspect about him that changes is his costume.
I can only expect an extremely small sliver of the Purerave community at large to actually be able to understand where I'm coming from with this. Once more, in the event of cap_n_obvious deleting his review to reply to this one, here is my previous review in the interest of posterity.
Johnny Depp is a fucking ass ratchet, and so are his legions of idiotic fans who think he should be in absolutely everything. At his core, he plays the same fucking character in every single movie. Also, who's fucking idea was it to make him look like a cross between Michael Jackson and Prince Valiant? If anyone could have nailed the portrayal of Willy Wonka, especially in a remake, it's Christopher Walken. Other than that, this movie is fucking sacrilege and I hope Roald Dahl comes back from the dead and eats Depp's face.
Wednesday October 25, 2006 - 3:54 PM
nothing special.
but not horrible.
Wednesday October 25, 2006 - 2:47 PM
I thought the original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was a hell of a lot better then the new one. The new one had very little from the original plot and songs. Well for a fact, they had none of the original songs. Also, the Oopmpa Loompas looked extremly stupid from the original movie. I'm not that big of a fan of Johnny Deep either so maybe that sorta ruined the movie. Sort of at the beginning when all the children come with a guardian and to greet the visitors, Willy Wonka set up a stand with wax dance that sing and move around and then they catch on fire. I thought that was extremly stupid and made no since what so ever. They didn't even have the classic hand that held your coat and hat. I was looking foward to seeing that in the movie but they never had it.
Wednesday October 25, 2006 - 2:03 PM
Johnny Depp is soo hott in this! omfg no joke.
I love this movie with a passion! its great!
I really did hate the oringal one.. Willy Wonka was kinda mean.. not like in this one hes soo crzy! Love it!
diffinity wroth a 5.
Wednesday October 25, 2006 - 1:26 PM
Wednesday October 25, 2006 - 1:21 PM
Only 2 stars. I liked some jokes. Whats with him and canibalism? The tv part was one of the bests.
Wednesday October 25, 2006 - 12:34 PM
good imagery, light-hearted, comical... great flick. Didn't meet all expectations but I guess I shouldn't expect so much. Burton is getting old.
Wednesday October 25, 2006 - 12:05 PM
Love Depp.. Love Burton... but as far as this movie goes i'd rather give linsay lohan an over the top with gary coleman....::pukes:: this movie is worse than a shit sandwich
Wednesday October 25, 2006 - 12:04 PM
so good...depp was an awesome and still fairly creepy wonka
Wednesday October 25, 2006 - 11:35 AM
I was really disappointed with this movie. Normally, I love almost every Tim Burton film.. but this one was just ''meh''. I didn't like how they used the same person as all of the oompa loompas. AND, Johnny Depp really creeped me out in this, which is different cause that's the one of the last ways he usally makes me feel HAHHA. But I guess that was good considering Gene Wilder in the old verison scared the living shit out of me. I don't know, I just wasn't as impressed as I thought I was going to be.
Saturday October 21, 2006 - 11:32 PM
I liked it for the most part...
Saturday October 21, 2006 - 9:31 PM
it could of been better....
Thursday October 19, 2006 - 3:09 AM
Of course this one wasn't like the first one.
It's TIM BURTON.
I went in not expecting to see the same thing as in Willy Wonka.
In the orignal Charlie & The Chocolate Factory book by Roald Dahl, it isn't hardly anything like what Willy Wonka was, it was more along the lines of what Tim Burton executed it in Charlie & The Chocolate Factory.
Overall, it was good movie.
I don't think there could have been a better modern day Willy Wonka besides Johnny Depp.
Wednesday October 18, 2006 - 4:55 PM
It's Pretty Good I Liked It
Wednesday October 18, 2006 - 4:09 PM
This is a great movie ...
FOR ME TO POOP ON!
Wednesday October 18, 2006 - 3:56 PM
I really disliked the fact that they only used one guy for ALL the oompa loompas! I mean WTF?! is there some sort of midget shortage in the world today?
Wednesday October 18, 2006 - 3:31 PM
It was ok...the first one was definatly better tho....But johnny Depp can usually make any movie good cause hes a great actor
Wednesday October 18, 2006 - 3:15 PM
ahh the new one was horrible i was soo dissaponted i love johny but this movie wasnt that good the original was 10 times better
Wednesday October 18, 2006 - 2:29 PM
This film was useless. It utterly fails in all aspects to meet the high, glorious expectations of the original film, or even an adaptation from the literature.
THIS is where Depp started going down... maybe sooner, but it's certainly an exclaimation mark.
Wednesday October 18, 2006 - 12:56 PM
In their review, Ebert & Roper commented negatively on how Johnny Depp's portrayal of Willy Wonka reminded them of Michael Jackson, but in an interview that I heard about later, Depp said that he did infact partially use Michael Jackson as inspiration for this role. And this left me thinking... why would you want to channel a pedophile into your performance of a children's book character? Does anyone else find that a little weird?
And thus sets the tone for how I feel about this film as a whole.
Everyone knows the story, but I can't say I recall the story well enough to judge the accuracy of the on-screen adaptation. The movie on its own I found interesting but also unsettlingly strange at the same time. I still can't put my finger on it, possibly the overall tone of the movie... some combination between Willy Wonka's indifference to the children (even the method in which he chose his heir), grotesque-ness of his character, and Charlie's wholesome practicality and the classic children's movie morals he embodies... makes for an awkward mix.
Either way, I think this movie is worth seeing despite my criticisms. I mean, it is Tim Burton, what did I expect right?
