I thought it was pretty good... a tad too much hollywood flair for me which took away a bit from the joys of star trek, but it was very good overall.

More cinema re imagined.

It seems to be catching on. James bond, and Battle Star Galactica to name a couple of others.

Pretty cool. I liked it, it was a well balanced movie.

Seriously people? Why write a review of a Star Trek movie if you're not a Star Trek fan?

I thought it was a great movie. Something new and fresh to attract new fans to the series, and to keep older fans wanting more.

Sure it may have been a little unrealistic in some ways, like a mining ship thats been stranded for 25 years destroying half the fleet, but just the sheer size of it alone was amazing.

As for Kirk becoming Capt right away. Well, no you wouldn't get promoted right after finishing Boot, but after a recommendation from a former Capt, and showing that you're capable to command a vessel, who knows right? Besides, its just a movie.

Other than that, I thought the character development was really good. Explaining how McCoy got the name Bones was pretty clever, and the appearance of an aged Spock was nice, as opposed to having to see Shatner in another ST movie that wasn't part of the original series. (Generations anyone?)

Awesome. I expected mediocrity, but this was creative and well-written for a modern sci-fi movie which seem to depend on little plot and lots of action. This, of course, had the action down too. Amazing special effects, sweet fight scenes, LOVED the casting, and I really enjoyed some of the reimaginings of the characters and their lives they depicted. Very entertaining and I definitely want to see it again.

Excellent movie. Obviously they couldn't just change the original star trek without pissing fans off. SO they fell back on a old plot idea. Okay it is over done in the star trek universe but at the same time. time travel seems to be very easy in the star trek universe. Hell all different sorts of crews have done it.

Kirk definatly was not made captain in a few weeks. They skip forward in time to a point when kirk has already been throught the academy. Like someone else pointed out he was going for his third time to try and pass the test before becoming a captain. Kirk doesn't believ in no win scenarios.Obviously he was the perfect choice for the original captain of the enterprise to make him first mate.
edit

The Kobayashi Maru scenario was an infamous no-win scenario that was part of the curriculum for command-track cadets at Starfleet Academy in the 23rd century.

Kirk has gone through a few years of training before they even got to the enterprise. Also Kirk is the only one at first who warns the enterprise of impending danger. This combined with the fact that Captain Pike had to make a split seconed disscision as to who would captain the ship in his absince. Obviously He chose SPOCK, Only to put kirk as the first mate. Since no one else on the ship had the training to be a captain. EVeryone else on the ship was trained for other jobs. Mccoy was a docter, Sulus a pilot, etc. After Kirk gets himself back to the enterprise and proves spock was not fit to command then obviously being the first mate and the only one with any real captains training. It is obvious that he would have to be captain of the enterprise.

technology goes through huge advances every 6 months. so a ship from even 60 years in the future would have devistating technology compared to the the ships from the time there in, in the movie. Think of our own history Sure we had tanks in WW2 but they were not even close to the marvals they are today. Also look at computers. every 6 to nine months after a brand new top of the line computer comes out. It has all the bells and whistle and no other computer out there is as crazy, Yet 6 months down the road another computer comes out blowing the last model out of the water. Also look at the advancement of computers from 1985 till now.

This movie was awsome.

Having Kirk become captain of a starship in the matter of a few weeks was pretty unrealistic. This is supposed to be the military after all

What drugs were you on when you watch it try three years bro how could he have gone for the test two times before and was on his three time. Plus they even saw he was one of the smart person out there and had a high IQ the movie was done well and there allways going to be someone to bitch about the dumbshit every I call it haters .Anyways it was the best and fun times for sure and I think something like a 100 year's ahead would have better weapons as well I mean we will see how far a computer in a 100 year's is better then the first computer and time line change happen before why could it not happen again

i wouldnt say im a trekie but i enjoy star trek once and a while and this movie kicked assssssss!!!!!

yes they change it for a new generation but really does it matter alll that much it was still written very well and was a great movie!

Point+Break

Aside from being a complete deviation from everything StarTrek ever was (Aside from the names and Leonard Nemoy's cameo as an ancient Spock.) it was a great show all in all.

Romulan mining ship from the future kicking the crap out of the Federation fleet? Not likely.

Missiles? Way to be mainstream. Romulans don't use "missiles". Never did. And anyone who thinks they've seen every episode would know this.

Spock fucking up the timeline? Convenient way to alter the entire history to suit a new target audience.

Bottom line: Its a great flick, but its not Startrek. Aside from a few halting and over edited battle scenes it was epic. It was not, however, consistant with how Gene Rodenbery wrote it. But then again it couldn't be if it was to make money from a group of people who want CG and terrible shallow storylines with little or no explanation of how the world they're enjoying actually works.

LHC anyone?

scorched earth has absolutely no idea what he's talking about.
he's actually so inaccurate in his points it's hard to believe that he even saw the movie.

see it for yourselves and make your own decision.

for me, i thought it was brilliant.
the best star trek movie i have ever seen, and i have seen all of them, plus every single episode of star trek, period.

yes i love star trek, but this movie transcends all that came before it in it's own special way.

I'm not really a Star Trek fan and I enjoyed it. The acting was solid and character portrayal seemed pretty spot on. There was a good mix of action and humor. I like that their were a lot of jokes poked at the original series that could be understood even if you aren't completely familiar with the Star Trek series. Simon Peg was hilarious. Best of all... No horrid Shatner appearances. I know he was the original Kirk, but he's a crappy actor.

I thought it was absolutely brilliant!! happy

The Spock/Uhura thing was pretty accurate, because I remember the episode in the original series where they did have a romantic thing. It wasn't out of character of either of them, just a reference to a fling embedded deep within the show's history.

The actor who plays Bones was REALLY good. I feel like he must have really studied DeForrest Kelly's mannerisms and body language. The action was great, the actors were quite good, and the plot was fascinating. smile I was glad they saved the Star Trek theme music 'til the end...nice touch. smile

selftitled

The only thing that threw me off was Spock & Uhura, which I thought was pretty out of character for him. But if you're willing to overlook that part, the movie was amazing and definitely did justice to the franchise.

Ark-Angel

I agree that the whole Kirk getting the Enterprise without actually being a crew member first was a little lame...

But the movie did have me on the edge of my seat, and who cares if it is a little hokey...

After all it is "Sci-Fi"

but i do not think Roddenberry would have been disappointed.

It was OK but not great. Boom and bang don't make a movie contrary to what most people seem to think.

Pros:

Lots of action

The Romulan ship was cool

Cons:

Using the time travel theme again was disappointing.

Having Kirk become captain of a starship in the matter of a few weeks was pretty unrealistic. This is supposed to be the military after all.

They also opened the door for rehashing (aka rewriting) the entire Star Trek storyline through the time travel trick.

They turned a Star Trek movie into another action film. This simply does not compare to Star Trek: First Contact.

**edit**

Since people are stupid:

Kirk took the Starfleet Academy exam - not a captains exam. For a real world comparison, how many people who go through an officers academy, fail the final exam twice, and still get promoted to General after one battle?

Amazing.

The only part I didn't like was Kirk & Uhura, the rest of the cast was done well and the fact that their time line was altered so now they can experience all-new adventures is awesome.

5 stars.

This movie is one of the best movies i have seen in the last 5 years.
I may not be fair tho, i am a Trek fan.

But if you never seen a Star Trek movie b4, i suggest watching it. Its filled with action and adventure, and tons of excitement and suspense to go along with it.

If you have seen and followed Star Trek, and the orginal seasons, you will most certainly love this movie..
i dont wanan spoil anything, just watch it.
