this movie sucked ass. they kept introducing a new sect of peoples every two minutes. bear people gypsy people, Russian cossacks guarding the evil lab at the end, what next monkey shit throwers. that would have actually made the movie worth it. what pisses me off about this movie isn't how bad it was, was all the people i talked to after that saw the movie, who told me the book was great because it is about atheism, and all of a sudden they are experts on this stuff. the kind of people who read hawking's and think he has something important to say about why everyone else sucks except for him. this movie was total rubbish, i would rather shit in my own mouth than hazard the second and third ones.

Like most book to movie adaptations, the movie doesnt at all compare. They did a good job at catching people who havent read the series up with the concepts within the movie like daemons and Dust. What I really didnt like about the movie was the rushing of the story (granted they had to keep it within reasonable limits running time) it was still frustrating to some level
the cg wasnt TOO bad and I'm also glad that the movie agrees with my pronounciation of the main character's name (Lyra: as in Lie-ra, as opposed to Lee-ra)
I was a little upset that they didnt end where the first book (approximately) did where Lord Asriel jumped into the tare in the universe(cause 10-15 more minutes added on to the end and they could have, plus that would have added a bit more of a cliffhanger to get people more interested in the (hopefully) next movies to follow)
Nicole Kidman did a MUCH better job than I thought she might when I first found out she would be playing Mrs. Coulter (not that she is a bad actress but I just didnt see her fitting the part, but I was corrected becuase she did do pretty well)
overall, I think it was well done and I'm excited to see how they take it in the rest of the series (waiting for the mulefa ^^) (as well hopping that the character Marie Malone will actually act using the arm movements and sounds the creatures used lol)

Merely okay. The effects were pretty cool. Somewhat disappointing in regards to following the storyline. Things just seemed to happen too fast? Does that make sense? *shrug*
I have problems with these "book-to-film" movies, which seem more numerous nowadays. Why can't a good book just be left as a book and not bastardized by Hollywood?

The movie was quite good, the effects were stunning, but I only have a few qualms with this movie. Mainly being during the polar bear fight, you could clearly see the tendons of the jaw after it got knocked off. And also, the ending was just... argh. >.<
Other then that, great movie. :3

Having read the books, the detail was very disappointing.
But that's to be expected with adaptation to screen.
Amanda's right though, the characters were all well chosen and represented.

I LOVE THIS MOVIE!
One of the "BEST MOVIES"
Lyra Belaqua, a young girl, has a demon that take can take any animal shape. She has a golden compass, & is the chosen child to save "the worlds."
Lyra's adventure continues throughout these three books.

i am not rating the movie itself seing as the book was far better and i must see what they do with the subtle knife.
but other than me sitting on the fence about the movie in general, the characters were very well done.
lyra, roger, coutler and the bears omg the bears were amazing.
i am going to go see it tomorrow...AGAIN!
