In MY opinion, Christian Bale is where it's at. If you haven't seen Newsies you don't know shit. He did an AWESOME old school new yorker accent in that movie, by the way. And is a pretty damn good triple threat for someone who didn't even train to become one.
Russel Crowe despite being a good actor is pretty much guilty of what you accused Christian Bale of. The only time I've seen him not play the tough guy was in a Beautiful Mind so put that in your pipe and smoke it.

In my oppinion, the movie was over-hyped. I knew when I saw Christian Bale as a star in it that it couldn't be a 5-star movie... He has one facial expression (like he's being raped by a goat) and one accent: Connecticut. He was great in American Psycho because he was playing a pompous ass, which is pretty much the only role he's good at... He ruined the movie.
Russel Crowe, as always, was fantastic.
The movie is worth watching, I just don't really think it's worth watching mutliple times. The story is pretty decent, albeit slow at some points. The action was great, the acting was good (aside from the aforementioned Christian Bale), but there was nothing terribly surprising about it.

Rancher Dan Evans(Christian Bale) heads into Bisbee to clear up issues concerning the sake of his land when he witnesses the closing events of a stagecoach robbery lead by famed outlaw Ben Wade(Russell Crowe). No sooner or later, Wade is captured by the law in Bisbee and Evans finds himself one of the escorts who will take Wade to the 3:10 to Yuma train in Contention for the reward of $200. Evans quest for taking Wade to the station is not only for saving for his land but an inner battle that he can be more than just a naive rancher in the eyes of his impetuous and gunslinging son William Evans. The transport to Contention is hazardous and filled with ambushes from Indians, pursuits by Wade's vengeful gang and Wade's own conniving and surreptitious demeanor that makes the ride all more intense.
i loved this movie. i wasn't really too sure about it when i rented it, but i'll give most anything with Christian Bale a shot. and i was not disappointed. the story was a little drab in some spots, but it's a western. they always seem to have those slow spots. the plot was very well laid out, and i loved the character development. it does seem kinda cliched, but i liked how Bale's and Crowe's characters bonded during the transportation. kinda gave it a wholesome feeling i guess. theres not really a whole lot i didn't like about this one. i especially loved the cracks of the pistols and revolvers. it wasn't just the usual 'bang bang pwew pwew twack twack' sounds that most movies involving gunfire use. made it seem more realistic to hear the retort echo off canyon walls or just echo away. so i'll say it gets 5 stars, just for surprising me.

This movie was really good. If you like Russel Crowe in The Quick & the Dead - you`ll love him (as a sort of an antihero and not the antagonist at the least) in here.
Christian Bale was also superb. Im enjoying his roles more and more often.
I am regreting that I didn`t make the time and see it in the theatre.
