I've had Duvel a few times, and to be quite honest, this one sucks in comparison to other Belgian ales. It's lacking something, but skunkiness is not it. I've a feeling that this one is one that should never be placed out on an unrefrigerated shelf at the LCBO.

Those who have hinted at, or complained about the price... get a clue. If you want good, pay for it. And to be quite honest, the $3.05 it is per bottle, is paltry. But in comparison to what it offers, yes, this is a bit steep.

The beer itself... it is very malty, with hints of fruitiness. I find it to be a little too hoppy on the finish for my liking. I'd have to give this one a 3, only because I've yet to get one that was properly stored at the LCBO - i know it can be better than what i've had.

This is another solid beer from Belgium (I'm a huge fan of Stella). Let's be real here though, this is a country known for crafting amazing brews. The 8.5% ABV comes from the three fermentations that this beer goes through, which help to give it the feeling of an ale while it still drinks like a pilsner. I believe that Duvel has connections to Brewery Ommegang as well, which is another fine Belgian brewery as their online gift shops are connected (try the Ommegang Abbey Ale...I actually had it last night, amazing stuff). Cheers!

I've had this beer exactly once it was pretty tasty but super expensive. Joel is right though the glass is very important. Really it is with any beer over 7% alcohol.

The first time I tried this beer it arrived in a large official glass and the full top half of the glass was filled with a light frothy foam.

Since then I've been finding excuses to splurge on this refreshing Belgian beer whenever possible. Duvel is a slightly golden pilsner-like beer. The 8.5% alcohol is hardly noticeable and is concealed well behind its crispyness.

It starts off a bit fruity with hints of caramel. It then settles down and becomes a bit tarty and dry. The carbonation is always very strong and contributes to its dryness. The last few sips are comfortable yet have a nice kick in sweetness just as the carbonation and head dissipate.

I cannot stress enough how important it is to drink this beer out of a proper glass. Drinking out of the bottle will give you a mouth full of bitterness with little enjoyment. The large glass is ideal for locking in the carbon-dioxide and creating a light yet thick foamy head.

Duvel is very similar to another famous Belgian beer, Stella Artois, yet not as bitter.

Look for it in the distinctive "stubby" 33cl bottle.
