Maguire did a great job with his whole Wicked 'series,' if you will. I have nothing bad to say about this book or any other book he has written.

I haven't been able to actually finish a book in quite a while, but I really enjoyed this one. I like the spin on the story. Thoroughly enjoyed and highly recommended.

I must admit, I didn't read this book until *AFTER* seeing the Broadway show. Idina Menzel is like my *GOD*.....but this book was absolutely amazing and a whole lot darker than a musical could ever try to be.
I think Maguire is brilliant in taking "fairy tales" and trying to give a background story to understand what REALLY went on.
I love this book...the show...and I pray they someday make a movie.

The novel is a political, social, and ethical commentary on what good and evil really are. The story centers around Elphaba, the misunderstood green-skinned girl who grows up to become the infamous Wicked Witch of the West. Elphaba acquired her green skin through one of her mother's affairs and was also born with incredibly sharp teeth. It tells of her time at Shiz University, as well as her journey to the Emerald City and The Vinkus, among other places in Oz. The book explains Elphaba's motives and examines her true personality. Many familiar characters from Oz are featured in Wicked, including the Wizard, Glinda (here originally called "Galinda" but later adopting the name Glinda out of respect for Dr. Dillamond who often mispronounced her name), the Wicked Witch of the East (here called Nessarose), Boq and Dorothy. Maguire also introduces several new characters including Fiyero, Madame Morrible, and Doctor Dillamond. In my opinion , an all around awesome book.
