Tara McCall's fiction work, "This Is Not A Rave: Into the Shadow of a Subculture" focuses on a brief overview of the development of raves, rave culture, and raves in certian areas. This is a quick, easy read and it covers many interesting topics, although not in depth.
While each chapter focuses on a particular subject, there are also side comments from ravers themselves on the topic at hand. She includes snippets of her interviews throughout the text in side bars or with other raver testimonial. This lay out is fun, but a little hard to get used to and sometimes distracting from the text itself.
My favourite chapter was "Meaningful Movements" which is a chapter devoted to dancing at raves. McCall attempts to make sense of dancing at raves because so many people "just do it" and don't even think/know about what they are doing. Also, in the bottom corner of the book, there is a flip-photograph. When you flip the pages fast enough, it looks like a little person is dancing.
Tara McCall is a Canadian born author and has lived in Toronto most of her life. She does have a focus on the Toronto rave scene, which most other rave books lack. This is essential for knowing our own roots as Canadian ravers and to support our fellow Canadian.
Over all, this is a fun book with lots of info on lots of things. For a fuller explaination of "all things rave" please refer to my review of "Genteration Ecstacy" by Simon Reynolds.
