SPOILERS!
pros:
- character development, especially Harvey and Gordon, spot on
- action was easier to follow
- I loved the Joker's ideology throughout the film
- loved that Bruce was out doing batman related stuff in the daytime
- so glad they didn't kill off the joker but did kill of rachel
cons:
- bat-pod/bike... too much, no a fan of the design
- the brief cameo by the scarecrow was too brief
- bruce's turmoil seemed slightly glossed over
- Harvey's transition was good and I liked the allusions of his dark side before he became Two-Face but I thought it was too brief and a weak demise, especially after the Joker alluded to gravity not two minutes before.
I would argue that there is no character development or origin for the Joker, opposed to Harvey's spiral into Two Face. Harvey becomes more and more desperate and disillusioned as the criminal underworld reacts to the trio of Gordon, Dent and Batman's campaign. As the symbol for decency, his own morality is pushed to the limit and he eventually snaps.
Joker on the other hand walks onto the screen a fully formed villain. His ideology is amazing, that for the extreme righteousness that Batman must maintain in his street level attack on crime, he counters with brutal anarchy. He tells different anecdotes about how he became the Joker not so much to add confusion into his past but to show how he became that way is irrelevant.
Terrorizing the city and holding it at ransom with fear and how he doesn't value money or the criminal element, he's there to spread madness. Crane tried to use fear to make a profit, sick and twisted as the Scarecrow methods are, he still wanted money. Two-face wanted revenge though his m.o. forced him to leave everything up to chance. the Nolan-Ledger Joker lives to make people question the stability of the society they live in. Batman is the the extreme that a society needed to kick start their hope, Dent was the shining avatar of goodness before he crumpled under grief and disillusionment and the Joker is anarchy trying to resist Batman's street level order.
oh, the fire truck on fire? brilliant.
