I still don't know whether this book was meant for children.
However I had just finished the Cancer Ward by Solzhenitsyn (oh, what? never heard of him? nobel prize? no? ..no?) So I might be a bit biased.
I recall this book being 'the book' when it came out, soon to be eclipsed by the next literary masterpeice, the Da Vinci Code
(the sarcasm oughta be palpable)
It was a childrens story, jazzed up for book clubs.
The writing style wasn't anything special, nor was the content.
Except for a *twist* ending that leaves you wondering! :O
another sterling example of a New York Times bestseller.
