i had a great time... saw lots of good friends, and generally enjoyed the hell out of this party... it was intense on the brain
bse played a little light for my tastes, but they did an excellent job keeping me fixated on the tunes, the emcee's were solid, but should have backed off a bit for that set
ritm, well, i love that show. no complaints @ all, was happy to see it again.
only drawback to the event was that 'vip' was a fucking ripoff. i like my lanyard, but it wasnt worth an extra $40, and thats the only thing i got for the extra cash... there was no 'line bypass' , there was no 'vip bar'... comeon... follow through if your going to charge double...

seemingly against all odds, we pushed thru and made this event happen. right from the very start there was problems regarding the venue (opium nightclub, toronto [which i will never return to]... over the weeks of planning and promotion there was countless phonecalls made, attempts and confirmations, etc etc, and it wasnt until about a week before the event that we got "final confirmation" on the venue...
i spent saturday ripping around with my excellent group of friends who totally made my weekend by helping out so much, and putting up with my shit... we picked up more than $15,000 in sound equipment, and moved it all downtown...
arrived at the club @ just about 7pm, dropped off the gear, went to the hotel room and checked in, dropped my stuff, and got back to the club as fast as possible...
walked upstairs into a fucking SWAMP. pete & dustin had already been sweeping up the floor, and generally cleaning the spot to make it a suitable place to party... setup didn't take tooo long, although when the club owner leaves @ 8 to pick up his bartenders, and doesnt return until 9:15 (when the doors should already be open) ... then his bartenders showed, and cleaned up the upstairs bar, got stuff prepped... by now, about 10pm, we have 2 rooms of incredible sound... anyone who caught either illfingas b2b dubcomm or the 30 mins of catacomb before the rain, can attest to the fact that opium NEVER sounded so good.
so, thats that stress... now onto the music and other elements of the jam that truly made this one of the most memorable events i've ever been involved with.
because of time delays, waiting on people, etc etc, i did not get to play from 9pm-10pm... instead, when illfingas arrived, he asked if i'd like to do the set b2b with him... seeing has he is one of the few toronto originators of the dark sound, i jumped at the chance, and i must say i was really pleased with the results, our styles seem to compliement eachother, and its something i hope to do again!
following us, catacomb stepped up to the decks... jeesus. you might not know that catacomb is now a 1 man show, its too bad, but, musically, i personally think larry has developed his sound into some seriously technical, hard as fuck, amazing drum n bass... he played for 30 or so minutes before the torrential downpour began... we thought, even with a little rain, the event would go over alright, because the front 25 or so feet of the ceiling was pretty well covered... nope.
in the span of about 1 minute, i had to push a security guard out of the way to unplug a light rig, run back to the booth, cover the lasers with a tarp, ask catacomb to cut the sound and turn off the booth, and hustle with the crew to get the 1500W of subwoofer out of a 3" puddle... fucking insanity. we moved alot of the main-room sound gear into a small storage closet, and the DCS905 "main room" turned into a music-less smoking lounge...
downstairs in the exponential frequencies room, things had been running fairly smoothly, and all the dj's were on point. some played to a closed club, but, thats the nature of the beast when dealing with clubs that arent prepared for a night like this... we learned our lessons... belive that....
so, by about midnite, the STACKED 2 room event we built, had 1 small room. myself and partners in promotional crime had to figure out wtf to do, as we all had headliners waiting to play... so, with the compression of the lineups, some reduction in time to ppl's slots, we got them in. huge huge fucking sets.
nc-17 has some of the sickest tunes available to the planet. constantly on the hunt for new bits, and ALWAYS in the studio making new ones, these guys have been makin big international waves with their signature toronto sound, and they show us why every time they're behind the decks. NC-17 for life.
following nc-17, the man of the hour, MASHEEN got up to the decks..
i hope you were among the people that stuck around after the rainfall, as the vibe, and the music in this club was explosive. when masheen touched down, the crowd erupted. i know i personally spent a good 30 mins rite up front, dancing like i was 16 again. he is truly an incredible performer, and i'm really proud to be supporting his work in this city... as time goes on more and more people are turning to the darkside, and hearing masheen play can be a big help for that. its relentless energy and technical skill. untouchable.
... to each and every performer... thank you. for being so accomodating when so much crazy was happening at the event, you stuck it out, and helped make this one of the absolute best events i've ever had the pleasure of arranging.
... to the crowd. wow. i love you fuckers. everyone i saw had a smile on their face and a drink in their hand, lots of dancing, lots of laughing, maybe a little swimming too! i'm glad you stuck it out, for sheer love of the music. big the fuck up. YOU are the reason i think about doing the event thing ever again. thank you.
... to opium nightclub and staff... fix up. good luck.
... to my friends, who totally helped me keep my cool in the face of adversity, thank you. i would not have survived the nite if it wasnt for the kind, supportive words of my friends. and the excessive work, patience, and overall fucking awesomenesss that the ppl i know are.
conclusion: wow. what a fucking night. this is one for the books.
