My SMILE review...
Wow.
I really don't know what to say right now. For the first time in 5+ years of throwing events, 23 parties to date, WE HAD TO CANCEL OUR PARTY. You know, it really sucks having all of your hard work taken away from you from a venue's incompetence. Some might say I'm being harsh, but I'm just telling the truth. We put so much hard work into this event. Weeks of making decorations. Over 150 unique faces to put on the walls, countless hours making candy bracelets, promoting our asses off on the internet. We had the venue primed for a sell out. This party had everything going for it, but at the 11th hour, the venue FUCKED US. You know, all we ask for is a little competence. We want to be told the truth. If the venue wasn't going to be ready in time, we would like at least 24 hours notice to make other arrangements. That's all we ask for. A little respect. From all the bad stuff that was going on with Blak, they should have known that our party would have been the redemption of the club. We booked the venue over 2 months in advance, had an international group of fans spending their hard earned money on gas, only to be led on by a club that really didn't want "it" as bad enough. This could have been the turning point for Blak. Huge crowd, big bar sales, packed house. SMILE could have done wonders for their image. But unfortunately they dropped the ball (to the detriment of all the paying customers who wanted to have a good time). To all of the loyal Goodfellaz supports that I spoke to, outside in the pouring rain for 4 hours, I am truly sorry. To the 250+ people who bought tickets, expecting a quality event that Goodfellaz has worked hard to provide, I apologize whole-heartedly.
If there is one good thing that came from this party it is the sense of community that still exists in the rave scene. Within 2 hours of us having to make the announcement that the party was canceled, we had all of the players, big and small, calling every venue in town looking for a place for us to go. It makes my heart swell with pride knowing that the whole scene (from OS/2 to Grimace, to Original Vibe, to Newmindspace, to Robotpilot, to Marcus Visonart to even Dr. Trance???) you have our back. And THAT is what 5 years of working your ass off for the good of the scene gets you. THANK YOU. We called a ton of venues. Had the whole club district on call. It was really remarkable, to feel the "vibe" that people care. Honestly, thank you.
You know this really sucks. We are not some half-assed promoters. We worked our fucking butts off for this event. This was our big flyer release party for our last event in September. We did everything possible to make sure that the night would be perfect. Provide the greatest vibe in the city and then hope that people would come back to send us off in style. You know. To see the looks on ravers faces who came all the way from Montreal, Ottawa, Detroit, Buffalo, Pittsburgh and all over the northeastern US just to party with us for the last few times, and having to TURN THEM AWAY is something that I hope I never see again. To give ravers a flyer and then have them not even care because they're disappointed with the current situation is UNACCEPTABLE.
I hope that people who got flyers for our last event will still come, and I hope that people who caught word early will still come. The party is 100% happening and this is just an unfortunate detour on our path to retirement. We love the Toronto hardcore scene and this party was an event that Toronto really fucking DESERVES. Like REALLY. The scene has gotten so stale recently (and I know this isn't the promoters faults, for some weird reason there's a huge crackdown on venues and the law enforcement are not accomodating) but seriously. If you're a venue, please realize that you have the power to save this scene. Please act responsibly.
Sorry this rant went on for so long, but I needed to get this off my chest.
Toronto I love you. I moved here to be a part of this scene and it makes me really sad to see it all pissed away.
All my love,
E.N.D
